Diabetes is your friend said Dr. Sunil Gupta on “Hello Diabetes” Education Program

On the occasion of 20th anniversary of Sunil’s Diabetes Care n’ Research Centre Pvt. Ltd (DCRC) in collaboration with Diabetes Care Foundation of India (DCFI) Nagpur had organized a mega Diabetes Awareness Diet Exhibition cum Screening Program “HELLO DIABETES Madhumeh Ki Paathshala” for People with diabetes, their relatives and masses on Sunday 17th August – 2014 at Vasantrao Deshpande Hall, Civil Lines, Nagpur.

Interactive session with lecture was conducted by Dr Sunil Gupta, Director DCRC. Various topics were covered like what is Diabetes, its Causes & symptoms, Exercise, complication of Diabetes in Kidney, Eyes, Heart, low sugar attack. Prevention of diabetes, home blood glucose monitoring, travel day Guidelines, common myths about diabetes. Open question answer session, was undertaken where in people with diabetes & other delegates clarified their doubts.

Dr Ajay Ambade, Retina surgeon spoke that eye is an important organ and uncontrolled Diabetes can severely damage the retina thus resulting in loss of vision , Dr Sudhir Bhave, Psychiatrist said to reduce the stress and lifestyle modification is the need of the hour , Mrs Kavita Gupta, Dietician & Diabetes Educator gave practical tips on diet in  Diabetes and to eat every 3-4 hrs to avoid hypoglycemia , Mrs Vinita Mehta,Chief Dietician, spoke that daily Foot Care is as essential  as keeping your face clean. Regular foot check up is important  to avoid gangrene or other foot related problems . Dr Sarita Ugemuge, spoke on “20 Yrs journey of DCRC”.

The Program started with “Krishna Janam” to mark the occasion of Janamastmi. various Skits, Role Plays like “Goli – Insulin”, “Diabetes Complications”,“Meethi Adaalat”,“Sajag Sahma ,Bindas” was showed in which Ms Vinita Mehta, Ms Parvinder Bamrah, Ms. Shraddha Fulzade, Ms Vidya, Ms Malvika Fulwani,Ms Shruti,Ms Pooja,Baby Vidhi Anand, Vivek Nagrare Mr. Raju Andulkar,Ms. Manisha Andulkar, ,Mayur Awasare,Kapil Sarak,Anant Joshi,Akhilesh Singh  played different  important role.

The Program was Inaugurated with the hands of eminent dignitaries from various sections of the society, Hon. Shri Avinash Pandey, MP Mr. Shyam Wardhane, Municipal Commissioner Nagpur , Dr. Dilip Gode Vice Chancellor of Datta Meghe Institute of Medical Sciences (Deemed University), Nagpur, Shri  Girish Gandhi noted senior social worker ,Dr. Milind Naik National Vice President, IMA- HQ, Mrs Preeti Pandey ,Type 1 Diabetic Baby. Vidhi Anand.

A unique program Citizen’s forum titled: “Meethi Batein…. with Sunil” was conducted by Dr. Sunil Gupta. In this session he interviewed few  People with diabetes and their lifetime  living with diabetes

Baby Mannat Kapoor, Type 1DM   has diabetes since the age of  less than 2yrs and  now she  is 9 yrs . One of the Youngest  Type 1 DM on Insulin pump since 3 yrs , she said that Insulin Pump has made her independent and her mummy doesn’t have to come to the school every day to give her Insulin She aims to become a  Diabetologist. She is a sports person &  plays Badminton regularly .

Ms Sonia Sahita Type 1 DM since 13 yrs , On Insulin pump ,Gold  Medalist from VNIT, presently successfully working in Bank She said that diabetes has never been a hurdle in her life . She has recently done an adventurous  river rafting which even a normal person would not have dared to do . She regularly monitors her blood glucose and well balances her busy schedule with diabetes .

Ms Kavita Mahatule, a Type 1 Diabetic  shared her heart touching experience that she was in coma for ten days when she was being diagnosed with diabetes at the age of 11 yrs she successfully overcome the life threatening condition. She happily got married and due to her brittle diabetes in pregnancy she was advised to shift on Insulin Pump by Dr Gupta. She was almost in tears while speaking that she   has delivered a normal healthy baby after all the pain of very stringent blood glucose monitoring 8-10 times every day. She thanked her family , husband and Dr Gupta for the timely support and advise.

Mr. Pankaj Sapra & Mrs. Shraddha  Sapra both Type 1 DM happily married  2mths  ago . Shraddha in a light mood shared that if she would have married a normal person than she would require more than 15 yrs to make him understand about Diabetes.

Senior , well controlled diabetics from various walks of life Mr. V.G. Bansod, 80 yrs, has survived 3 heart attacks. He is very active and goes for regular exercise . Mr. Vikas  Mishra ,Editor, Lokmat Samachaar, said that despite his hectic schedule he manages his diabetes well. He added that he started Insulin by choice as it is the best antidiabetic therapy as compared to oral drugs. Shri Govindlalji Agrawal, Director – Ramdeobaba Education Institute  shared his lifetime experiences that due to regular checkups & medications he has achieved  victory over diabetes.

On this occasion an Ambulance was unveiled with the hands of Hon. Avinash Pandey,  who  donated it for spreading  the knowledge  of diabetes & screening people for  diabetes  in rural & remote  areas .

Diet Exhibition displayed the foods to be included and avoided for Diabetics, heart friendly oils, high sodium foods to be avoided by people with Hypertension, functional foods – Flax seeds, Oats bran, garlic, jau, etc play a important role in reducing blood glucose and cholesterol. Various nutritionist  of the city counseled the Diabetics-  Kavita Gupta, Kavita Bakshi, Vinita Mehta, Jaya Kewalramani,  Parvinder Bamrah, Shraddha Fulzade,  Shruti Naidu, Malvika Fulwani, Shruti Aswale, Pooja Kore , Shivani Ranade .
The Program was successfully conducted by RJ Mr Nitin Bharti. App 520 free blood sugars test, 250 free BMD screening were done.1100 Diabetes Identity card were prepared for People with Diabetes. 1500 diabetics and their relatives benefited through the program.
